"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord; and he shall turn the heart of fathers to the children and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse". Malachi 4:5,6
Probably the most important biblical passage relating to the role of Elijah as forerunner of the divine manifestations is the one quoted above.
The fulfillment of that prophesy is accomplished with John the Baptist. Note the concordance between the text of Malachi and the words quoted in Luke 1:17 when Gabriel, the divine messenger, announces the birth of the forerunner to Zacharias, his father: "...and he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children..."
Truly, the similatity between both quotes couldn't be closer. Therefore, the words of Jesus to His disciples confirm this: "...For all the prophets and the law prophesized until John. And if you will receive it, this is Elijah which was to come..." (Matthew 11:13,14)
But did Elijah's mission as forerunner ended with the death of the Baptist? Let's see what Jesus Himself says about this: "...Elijah truly shall come first and restore all things. But I say unto you, that Elijah is come already..." (Matthew 17:11,12)
Here, the Master seems to play with time: First he affirms that Elijah is coming, when at that moment he as well as his followers knew that John the Baptist had already been executed by orders of Herod. Evidently he refers to the future, and to leave that clearly stated to His disciples he goes on to explain that Elijah had already come! And in order not to leave any shadow of a doubt, the evangelist closes the passage with the contundent affirmation: "Then the disciples understood that he spoke unto them of John the Baptist." (Mathew 17:13)
We can deduce then, that Elijah also must precede the Lord on His
